Poppy seed is an oilseed obtained from the opium as a byproduct. Poppy seed is popularly known as Posto or Khas Khas. In India, poppy seed is mainly consumed by the residents of Eastern region. The same is ground to a fine paste and added in various dishes. The poppy seeds have a distinct flavour, which makes it a sought after dish. In general, the poppy seeds are white in colour with a mix of brown colour granules. The grades of poppy seeds are directly proportional to the extent of the white colour granules which is the key ingredient for better taste.

The most common adulteration of poppy seeds is done by adding semolina (suji). This is generally done by wholesalers/retailers selling unpackaged (loose form) poppy seeds.
